A fruit tree with a pale, forked trunk stands in front of a dry-stone wall, its leaves gone tan and russet with a few green ones holding on. Half a dozen yellow-green quinces still hang in the upper branches, and the grass at its foot is washed in soft green and ochre. Nobody picked the high ones, which is how the birds like it.
