A single olive tree rises on a thick, twisted trunk, the bark split open in two dark hollows and streaked grey, brown and cream. A fallen limb lies at its foot among tufts of dry grass, and above it the crown thins into narrow grey-green leaves against white. It has outlasted everyone who ever pruned it.
