An old fruit tree is trained flat against an ochre plaster wall, its bare branches tied out along horizontal wires in tiers. A few orange leaves still hang at the tips, the tree’s shadow repeats every branch on the wall behind, and a low course of stone and a strip of gravel run along the base. Decades of pruning, and it still tries to grow the other way every spring.
