A kraft cone of pink garden roses leans against the bottom of a grey panelled door, propped on a worn stone step beside crumbling render. Everything else has gone to slate and chalk, so the roses carry all the color in the frame, and a thin line of warm light shows at the door’s edge. Delivered, knocked for, and nobody came.
