The Maison

Not the hotel with the corporate lobby and the art chosen by committee. The one with the wisteria over the gate and the bartender who knows your drink.

You know the hotel. Not by name, but by feeling. White flowers and old wood in the lobby, a deep red carpet on the stairs, French doors that open onto a view you will think about for months. Sixty watercolor-inspired illustrations live inside that hotel, from the brass concierge bell and the bellhop's cart to the courtyard fountain and the poolside loungers.

The dining room is set. The cheese board is ready. The bartender is polishing crystal, and in the spa someone is arranging hot stones with the focus that turns a service into a ritual. Upstairs there is a chocolate on the pillow and a door hanger that says the rest of the evening belongs to you.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 80 to 91.

Many of the illustrations in this collection are available as prints. If the one you love isn't there yet, write to me.
