Paris at Dawn

Paris has a secret hour. Before the crowds and the cameras, there's just stone and light and silence, and a city so beautiful it almost hurts to have it all to yourself.

Paris at Dawn lives in the hour before the city wakes: pink light creeping across limestone, empty garden chairs in the mist, the Seine holding a sky that hasn't decided yet. Eighty-one watercolor-inspired illustrations keep to that hour, from Sacré-Cœur in the fog to a flower seller arranging stems in the rain.

Nothing here glitters. The stone is grey and the light is soft and the streets belong to the people who sweep them. A single leaf on wet cobblestones. The blazing glass of Sainte-Chapelle with nobody in front of it. It is the Paris you would see if you set an alarm nobody sets.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 42 to 53.

Many of the illustrations in this collection are available as prints. If the one you love isn't there yet, write to me.
