Market Day

You smell it before you turn the corner. Warm bread, crushed basil, peaches in the sun. You'll buy more than you meant to and stay longer than you planned.

Before the rooftops catch the sun, crates are coming off a truck and someone is hosing the stone clean while the awnings crank open one by one. Sixty-six watercolor-inspired illustrations follow that market from its first quiet hour to the walk home: figs and aubergines heaped past the lip of the crate, peaches glowing under striped canvas, the day's catch laid across crushed ice.

Down the row a vendor ties a loaf in brown paper. A thumb tests a tomato. A wedge of cheese vanishes into waxed paper, and a bag goes heavy with a baguette and the makings of the next great dish. You will buy more than you meant to and stay longer than you planned.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 72 to 79.

Many of the illustrations in this collection are available as prints. If the one you love isn't there yet, write to me.
