Grand Prix

Every driver wants to win here more than anywhere else, and not one of them can fully explain why. The harbor. The history. The sheer nerve the place demands.

Nowhere else do they race like this. Between stone walls and steel barriers, down to a harbor full of boats and back up past a casino that has watched the whole thing for the better part of a century. Seventy-eight watercolor-inspired illustrations follow a Monaco race weekend from its first quiet hour to the empty streets covered in confetti.

The cars are drawn the way they feel rather than the way a spec sheet describes them, leaning into the corner beneath the cliffs, half-dissolving into motion along a barrier. Around them, the rituals: a driver's head bowed over a single glove, a stopwatch beside a hand-marked lap chart, a tarnished silver cup that won something once, and champagne on a terrace after.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 136 to 147.
