Cellar & Vine

It takes a year to make the thing you'll finish in an evening. Fog on the rows, hands stained burgundy to the wrist, then the long dark where the barrels wait.

The morning starts in fog so thick the far end of the row isn't there, and for most of the year that is the whole job: walk the rows, watch the weather, wait. Seventy-two watercolor-inspired illustrations follow the year around that loop, from the baskets at harvest and the crates bleeding juice through the barn door to the stone rooms where a hundred barrels do absolutely nothing for a very long time.

The collection steps into the winemaker's study too, the harvest ledger open in its leather binding, next year's cuttings bundled and labeled. It ends at a farmhouse table, plates stacked, one glass still going.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 170 to 185.

Many of the illustrations in this collection are available as prints. If the one you love isn't there yet, write to me.
