By Rail

You settle in and the platform slides away. For now there is only the window, the warm light, and the whole country going by at the speed of an afternoon.

The light comes up over the fields before anyone wakes, and the first cup of coffee steams on a metal tray while the countryside brushes past the window. Seventy-five watercolor-inspired illustrations follow a single day on the rails, from the vaulted glass of a great station to the last lamp-lit carriage running on through the dark.

In between, the small things. A coat folded onto the rack. A book open and unread on a lap. A child kneeling backward on the seat to watch the world unspool, a cheek asleep against the glass, the wheat turning gold and the towns turning to silhouettes. This is the part of the journey nobody photographs and everyone remembers. Not the arriving. The going.

In The Annual, Volume One, throughout.

Many of the illustrations in this collection are available as prints. If the one you love isn't there yet, write to me.
