Above the Treeline

The air thins and the sound goes with it. Ski tracks on a clean slope, steam on cold glass, boots by a door with frost still on them, and the long quiet of altitude.

Above the treeline the world simplifies. Breath turns visible, snow takes the sound out of everything, and a single lift cable humming in the cold becomes the loudest thing for a mile. Thirty-nine watercolor-inspired illustrations keep to that altitude: a skier as a silhouette against a slope, two tracks drawn down untouched snow, goggles set down in the snow at a pause.

Then the door closes and everything gets closer and warmer. Boots with the frost still melting off them. Wool drying over a chair. Steam rising from a bowl of stew after a long day outside, and condensation running down the window between you and the cold.

In The Annual, Volume One, pages 242 to 249.
