One whole quince with its stem still on sits behind two cut halves, the pale flesh open to show a star of dark seeds at the core. Juice beads on the cut faces and has run into a small pool on the white ground, over a grey-violet shadow. Hard as a doorknob raw, and worth every minute on the stove.
