Two cream wool socks hang side by side from the edge of a red-painted windowsill, heels and toes knitted in grey and the wool flecked brown all over. The window behind is white with daylight and the wall beside it has gone damp and mottled. Wet through by lunchtime, dry by the second pot of tea.
