The Nike of Samothrace stands at the top of her marble prow, wings swept back and drapery pressed forward by an invisible wind, framed by the pale limestone walls and vaulted ceiling of the Louvre’s Daru staircase. The scale is staggering. Shot from slightly below and to one side, the composition emphasizes the forward thrust that has made this the most dynamic sculpture in any room it’s ever occupied.
