A dozen white tulips lie cone-wrapped in brown paper, heads still closed and the leaves running long and green up through the middle of the bunch. Cut stems come out level at the base under a twist of twine, and a cool grey wash spreads out behind the whole thing. Tulips keep growing after they’re cut, so this arrangement will not stay where it was put.
