A golden shaft of light pours down through a high window of St. Peter’s Basilica onto the polished marble floor below, the gilded vaulted ceiling and towering columns rising in painterly grandeur on either side. Watercolor pigment pools and bleeds along the marble flagstones into unpainted paper.
