Five pickers settle into the dirt of the center lane to eat, boots muddy to the ankle, two of them up on crates and the rest sitting where the ground offered. The rows keep their fruit hanging behind them while everybody’s hands are busy with bread instead. The vineyard can wait twenty minutes.
