Roma

Two thousand years is the background of someone’s Tuesday here. The Forum is the route to the bus stop. The Pantheon is where you cut through on the way to lunch.

The shutters in Trastevere open onto laundry strung across the alley and the dome of St. Peter’s rising behind it like another part of the neighborhood. A red Vespa leans against an ancient column that has been there since before anyone alive can remember. The carabiniere stands by the fountain in his cardinal red stripes. The light slants in over travertine and ochre and the dusty saffron of buildings that have been yellow since long before anyone agreed on what yellow should be. Inside a Trastevere church, the red sanctuary lamp glows in deep shadow above the altar. Outside, somewhere, a barista is pulling an espresso for a stranger who will drink it standing at the bar without sitting down.

Ninety-six watercolor-inspired illustrations move through Rome in seven registers. The monumental Rome of the Colosseum and the Pantheon, scaled to be recognized but framed to feel discovered. The sacred Rome of basilica candlelight, weathered fresco fragments, and figures in cassocks who could only be here. The lived-in Rome of cobblestones and balcony geraniums and small cars parked at piazza edges. The cucina romana of carbonara and cacio e pepe and the espresso standing on a marble counter. The streets, the gardens, and the river. And the Romans themselves — the cardinal, the Swiss Guard, the flower seller at Campo de’ Fiori, the grandfather and grandson sharing gelato on a piazza bench. The palette stays in warm earth: travertine, terracotta, ochre, cardinal red, basilica green, the dusty saffron of Rome’s particular yellow.

For hospitality brands, boutique hotels, restaurants, travel publications, wedding designers, food and wine brands, and any creator whose work touches Italian life. This is the icon half of the Italy pair that began with An Italian Summer, two collections that work alone and beautifully together when the time comes. Pair these with editorial photography, layer them into a brand season, or let a single image hold the whole Roman afternoon.
